London, England (AHN) - Researchers have concluded that it's healthy to be wealthy and not just for individuals but for the economy of nations as well.
Researchers studied 10 industrialized nations in Europe and discovered that a healthy population was good for a country's economy. Their findings are reported in BMJ Volume 333.
Among their findings were that just as good health favorably affected a nation's economy poor health adversely affected the economy, Newswise reported.
Researchers wrote in their paper that "ill health was contributing to the low level of economic growth in poor countries."
Researchers looked at the link between health and wealth in rich countries and found that good health increased a person's productivity at work. That equated to higher earning and a longer career, meaning the person earned more money over his or her lifetime.
Researchers also found that poor health not only decreased annual earnings but lifetime earnings as well. That was because people in poor health were more likely to retire early.
