Cataracts

Cataracts develop when the proteins in the lens of the eye are damaged, causing them to become translucent or opaque.

Having cataract's is a most stubborn condition to deal with. If it has become deep-seated, nothing short of a surgical operation will help in overcoming the trouble. If, however, the cataract is in the early stages, there are good chances of getting over the ailment by natural means. Even advanced cases can be prevented from becoming worse. There is increasing evidence to show that in several cases cataracts have actually been reversed by proper nutritional treatment.

Nutrition is one promising means of preventing or delaying the progression of cataracts. Some specialists believe that the most important cause of many cataracts is poor nutrition.

Adelle Davis, one of America´s best-known nutritionists, has pointed out that animals develop cataracts if deprived of pantothenic acid and amino acid, tryptophane and vitamin B6 needed for tryptophane assimilation. She states that the diet of the cataract patient should be high in B2, B6, as well as whole B vitamins, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, D, E and other nutrients. Beta-carotene, and selenium) may also be a factor in cataracts. These
compounds can squelch free radicals-unstable oxygen molecules-that can damage the
lens. The herb bilberry is rich in flavonoids, which prevent degeneration of the lens and retina. In addition, having diabetes or being overweight increases the risk of cataracts, probably because high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood contribute to the destruction of lens proteins. Other causes of cataract are stress and strain, excessive intake of alcoholic drinks, sugar, salt, smoking, vitamins deficiencies (especially Vitamin C), aging, radiation
and side-effects of drugs prescribed for other diseases. The effect of sunlight exposure on eyes, may increase cataract risk.

The Nurses' Health Study found that lutein+zeaxanthin were associated with a reduced need for cataract surgery. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in the lens. Several recent studies also have examined these two nutrients and their relationship to reducing the risk of developing cataracts.

This combination of supplements usually provides adequate cataract protection; however, the following nutrients may also be helpful: The herb gingko biloba, which improves circulation and has strong antioxidant properties. Alpha-lipoic acid shows promise as a cataract preventive and also boosts the effectiveness of vitamins C and E. Because grape seed extract can have a therapeutic impact on even the smallest blood vessels, it benefits circulation in the eye. Consider adding essential fatty acids as they nourish the eye. GLA & EPA along with Carotenoids are good supplements for dry eye syndrome.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables; they're good sources of antioxidants.

Along with the dietary treatment, the patient should adopt various methods of relaxing and strengthening the eyes. These include moving the eyes gently up and down, from side to side and in a circle, clock-wise and anti-clockwise; rotating the neck in circles and semi-circles and briskly moving the shoulders clock-wise and anti-clockwise.
