How Prepare for and Recover from Surgery

Here are notes from Carol Dalton's audiotape:
Preparing for and Recovering from Surgery

Many people go into surgery ill-prepared for it and this lengthens their
recovery time.

Pre-surgery:

You want your body to be in best condition possible so it is better able to
withstand the trauma of surgery.

Be sure you are comfortable with the decision to have surgery. This positive
mental outlook will be conducive to recovery. Ask the doctor a lot of
questions, may be helpful to have someone with you when talking the doctor.
A second opinion may be helpful in your decision-making process. Trust
between the doctor and patient is important. Being tensed due to lack of
trust or fear prior to surgery will restrict circulation and will increase
toxins.

The body can regenerate healthy cells if given the nutritional support it
needs.

Some concerns relating to surgery:

- Preventing infection - this is of major concern to surgeons
- Reduce pain, swelling, inflammation - not possible to avoid entirely, but
promoting healing will decrease these
- Detoxification - the effects of the anesthesia and removal of toxins due
to surgery is important

Exercise prior to surgery is important. This will increase bone strength &
increase circulation (which will move toxins out of body more efficiently) &
oxygenate tissues better. Any exercise will help, even if limited as to what
you are able to do prior to surgery.

Stress management - relaxed going into surgery will help.

Diet prior to surgery -
this will strengthen the body in advance of surgery.
Avoid sugar, processed foods, caffeine. Eat as much of a whole-foods diet as
possible. Starting four to six weeks prior to surgery will be helpful.

What the body needs prior to surgery:

- Protein to build healthy cells
- Pure water to help body cleanse itself
- Mixed Fiber to cleanse both digestive tract and bloodstream
- Supplements - therapeutic doses necessary to achieve desired results and
supplement are the only way to achieve these dosages.
- Zinc - foods with zinc are the foods you should not be eating a lot of
prior to surgery, so supplements will provide the additional zinc needed for
healing
- Vit C - foods high in vitamine C eaten will raise acidity of body and this
will not be good prior to surgery, so supplements are the better way

Make sure supplements taken are tested for heavy metals, bacteria, etc. You
do not want to be putting these things into our body prior to surgery. Make
sure supplements are absorbed by the body. Most on the market are not tested
for this. This is the advantage of Shaklee supplements.

Protein:
High quality vegetable protein, soy-based is best - will provide fatty-acids

Soy protein powder usual recommended serving size is 3 T - do two servings
per day, one perhaps as a meal´s protein replacement and the other as an
extra protein source. (NOTE: soy by itself is not a complete protein, but
the soy-based powders are complete proteins due to added ingredients)

Doctors have been amazed by the effects of protein with patients undergoing
surgery or chemo-therapy. Protein is important for new cell growth.

Vita-Lea:
Three or four a day in preparing for surgery for two weeks prior to surgery.
(Blood test would determine if you should be taking w/ or w/o iron.)

Fiber:
Cleanse ahead of time w/ soluble and insoluble - both gut and bloodstream
will be cleansed. Increase fiber to point your digestive system can tolerate


Herb-lax:
Will cleanse gut and liver ahead of time. Again not so much you have cramps
or diarrhea, but to increase bowel movements and remove toxins from body to
put it in a better condition prior to surgery.

B & C:
Vit C is a natural anti-inflammatory & a cell-proliferate.
3,000 - 4,000 mg per day. Increase slowly - it may cause diarrhea at first,
do not increase so rapidly as to cause this. After surgery do not decrease
this suddenly as body continues to excrete vit C in the same quantity it has
been for a few days regardless of intake. A sudden reduction could cause a
vit c deficiency.

B-Complex - an anti-stress nutrient, helps nerves heal 6- 8 per day

Zinc:
Zinc, protein and C have been the most thoro´ly researched w/ regard to pain
levels and surgery. Studies show a 50 % reduction in pain associated
w/surgery when zinc is increased. Zinc is needed to make new cells, the body
can not manufacture new cells w/o it.

Normal dose would be 50- 60 mg/day, but when a lot of new cell growth is
needed such as at surgery or burn victims, increase dose for a short term
keep level up to 100 mg/day. This would be for a few weeks prior to zinc and
after while the body is healing.

Anti-oxidants:

Vitamin C, zinc, Carotomax (beta carotene), vitamin E - these will prevent
free-radical damage and help body heal much faster.

Formula I (not available in Canada):
Builds immune system, contains anti-oxidants, prepares body for the fight.
2-8 per day, depending on how many of the other individual anti-oxidants you
are taking.

Beta-carotene:
Will cleanse cells and keep inflammation from happening. You want
respiratory mucus lining as healthy as possible and beta-carotene will help
w/ this. Skin repair also uses beta-carotene. Strengthens cells

Vita E:
Oxygenates cells - moves oxygen thru cells, protects from free radicals.
This results in less cell damage and therefore you have less cellular repair
to take place.
NOTE: Some can not use E and fatty acids (lecithin, EPA, GLA) prior
to surgery. If you bleed too easily (either due to medications or the way
your body is). If this is so for you, go off these things for two weeks
prior to surgery. Take after surgery to prevent blood clots while you are
recovering.

Alfalfa:
Contains Vitamin K and helps blood to clot better. For most people, using E,
lecithin, EPA, GLA will balance out w/ alfalfa. 10- 20 per day - will help
prevent hemorrhages during surgery.

Optiflora:
Optiflora will get digestive system in balance ahead of surgery. It provides
a guaranteed delivery of live beneficial organisms to the intestinal tract.
This helps prevent overgrowth of pathogens. It also helps to prevent
constipation without causing diarrhea.

Garlic:
Sometimes put on antibiotic prior to surgery. Garlic will get digestive
system in balance ahead of surgery - will help to balance intestinal flora.

Echinacea:
Builds white blood cells and helps body to fight infection. 4 - 10 per day,
split doses thru out day.

Calcium-Magnesium:
Keeps muscles more relaxed, coats nerve endings to help them heal and repair
more quickly. Will help you sleep, may add some valerian to help you sleep
more deeply for the few weeks prior to surgery so body can get the rest it
needs.

Iron:
Check for anemia prior to surgery. Find out the actual number for your
hematocrit. You want it to be at the top of the chart so you will heal
faster. Do not add iron if your iron level is already up. Additional iron
will place stress on the liver.

After surgery:

Issues after surgery:
Healing, repairing, scarring, pain, energy, regaining muscle tone

Continue same routine after surgery, adding...

Performance: - balances electrolytes and rehydrate

First thing after surgery - Performance. You leave surgery dehydrated due to
not drinking prior to surgery. Dilute it more than usual as stomach may not
tolerate it right after surgery. Have someone bring Performance ice chips
from home for when you are recovering from surgery.
Use Performance for the first few hours.

As soon as they tell you that you can add something other than ice or water
and you are not feeling nauseated, add protein powder. Alternate drinking
this w/ either Fitness or Physique. These rebuild cells. They are sports
drinks to encourage recovery for athletes. Surgery is like running a race
and your body needs to recover from it. Alternate the Fitness or Physique
w/the protein. Don´t mix them together.
These should be your first drinks.

Peppermint-Ginger (not available in Canada):
Will calm stomach and help w/ dizziness.

Chewable Calcium:
This will help calm the stomach and will reduce gas that often comes after
surgery. Digestive tract was put to sleep during surgery and it needs to
wake up" and begin to function again before you will be allowed to go home.

DTX:
Milk-thistle compound to detox the liver from the effects of anesthesia.

When foods are allowed (6- 8 hours after surgery), you can begin adding
supplements. Depends on how your stomach is feeling.

Add fiber slowly after surgery - not so fast as to cause gas, but to help
cleanse. May mix a little w/ one of your drinks.

Vitamin E - four to six per day. (Unless high-blood pressure, then you must
build it slowly)

Lecithin will build sheath around nerve endings - six per day.

GLA - an incredible anti-inflammatory - six per day.

EPA - if you digest it okay - six per day.

Alfalfa - a diuretic and anti-inflammatory and will help w/ swelling and
pain. Will help kidney function after being put to sleep.

Herb-Lax - gently, so as not to cause gas, but to get things moving.

Pure water - may be a good time to have someone bring Best Water Carafe.

B-Complex - will promote healing and increase energy.

Ginseng - will increase energy and support adrenal glands.

Dandelion leaf - tincture form from Wind River herbs: 1-800-903-4372 They
will send a catalog. Dandelion leaf will help your body to not retain fluid
and this is important in keeping swelling down after surgery.

Support system so as to heal faster, but remember you need extra rest. Take
advantage of sympathy floating around. Energy used for activity will be
energy that cannot be used for healing.

Antibiotic Resistance … a Nightmare!

Howard Cartwright’s Cancer-Beating Story

Here is another Cancer testimonie...

A former Navy man, who spent years and years neutralizing bombs, Howard
realized at the age of 64 that something was wrong when he couldn’t walk up
a slight incline on a holiday and had to stop three times. He had been in
excellent health, so got to the doctor to figure out why.

Previous to thathis doctor had identified an inherited “rheumatoid factor” when his knees
were bothering him—and he refused meds and went to hike the Appalachian
Trail to cure his knees—over 600 miles of it! But now his hemoglobin was
incredibly low (6.9) when normal is 12-15.

Most of the tests came backnegative—they couldn’t figure out what was going on.
But he was bleeding somewhere. It took four units of blood for his color to come back—seven
days more to get his level up past danger. They finally figured out he had
malignancy in his duodenum (upper part of the small intestine).

His oncologist suggested drastic surgery (whipple procedure) that would remove
the cancer, part of the small intestine, and possibly parts of the gall
bladder, stomach, liver, pancreas, etc. He refused, because he knew he’d be
on pharmaceuticals for the rest of his life after that kind of surgery, and
he’d rather have the energy that he had without them. Lots of
soul-searching.

He thought about going to the Mexico clinic. But he didn’t
want to leave the doctors he trusted. So he took the chemotherapy there
that destroyed the dividing cells. He believes he didn’t have the usual
symptoms of chemo (nausea, hair loss, etc.) because he took lots of
supplements and did other things right. All he noticed was that his nails
weren’t growing normally.

He did visualization. “This tumor is rapidly shrinking, and those forces to
make this continue are already in place.” He’d make a football shape with
his fingers, and close his fingers so the shape was gone every time he said
this in his mind. He really believes that thinking is the absolute key to
good health. Taking supplements will not prevent illness if your thinking
is unhealthy.

He juiced carrots, apples, spinach, broccoli, etc. and took in lots of

Encouraging Cancer Story

To Whom It May Concern:

Eight months ago I was a picture of good health, and just turned 65. I rarely caught a "common cold", or sore throat, and never had a flu shot. But in August 2004, I was confronted with the biggest health challenge of my life.

I was working at my sister's in Levittown, Pa. installing siding on her house when I began having trouble breathing. My shortness of breath worsened as I tried to work through the problem. When I told my sister that I needed to take a break, she became concerned enough to take me to the hospital. At Lower Bucks Hospital Emergency Ward, I had a number of studies done, including a chest X-Ray and a MRI. The tests revealed that I was diagnosed with "pleura fusion". The pleura, the sack around the lung, was filled with fluid and had collapsed my lung.

Five days later, after more studies, the doctor gave me the bad news. He informed me that I have a very serious type of cancer called adeno-carcinoma. I went to an oncologist at Crozer Hospital in Chester Pa. He ordered more studies, including chest X-Rays, MRI, Body and bone Scans, and a CAT scan of the brain. The results were worse than we thought.

The tests showed that I had a large cancerous growth on my left lung, which had spread to my brain--- two lesions deep in my brain which were inoperable. The cancer had metastasized to my bones and other organs. The oncologist sadly told me that I had about 6 months to live. May not make it to see Christmas 2004.

I was totally devastated.

My radiation treatments began with 15 sessions ---once-a-day, five days a week --- to the area of my head to try to shrink the lesions. The radiation oncologist told me without this initial treatment I would be dead in three months!

I lost all the hair on my head before the end of the 15th treatment. I looked like Mr. Clean! In early November, I started the chemotherapy treatments. I was going "down hill", daily. I was weak and nauseous. I couldn't hold a job, didn't have the energy to work. I knew I was dying, but I was okay with that because God had given me perfect peace. And yet, I wanted to live, so badly.

In early January, I was introduced to Rusty and June Ost, both of whom are pharmacists. The Osts have worked with many cancer patients using non-traditional, nutritional therapies. Further good news about my progress came yesterday, the hospital reported that my white blood cell count has returned to normal. The doctor said, "It's perfect!" Only two more chemotherapy treatments remain, and I'll be done with them. I hope.

And speaking of hope, I encourage anyone suffering with cancer, not give up hope. I was told my cancer is one of the worse kinds of cancer a person can get because, “It does not respond well to treatment.” My Oncologist said. “There are no known cures!”

But I'm getting over it. I had heard of so many success stories of women beating breast cancer taking the Detox formula with Shaklee supplements. I had to try it. What did I have to lose?

The label says that 4 tablets may be taken once or twice a day for occasional irregularity.

1. Did you know that diarrhea is just another form of constipation? Therefore, you can use Herb-Lax to help when you have diarrhea, too, though that seems counter-intuitive. Nedra Sahr, nutritionist, points out: the circular muscles around the large intestines are supposed to contract rhythmically to push the feces along the length of the colon to the rectum… If the contractions are too strong and working too fast, the result is diarrhea. Lots of valuable nutrients are lost because there' s not enough time for them to get absorbed. If the contractions are too slow, minerals have time to bind with fats, and create hard stool that leads to constipation.

2 Current research says FIBER is the “daily laxative”. We ought to be getting in 25-30 grams of fiber from all sources every day to give bulk enough that contractions are stimulated. “Normal” is 2-3 bowel movements daily. Did you know that most of us get in only about 13 grams of fiber daily? That’s not surprising when you realize that a slice of WHOLE wheat bread is only 1.60 grams, and an apple 1.06 grams. If we eat a lot of meat (no fiber), cooked veggies (weakened fiber), processed foods (no fiber), dairy (no fiber), sugar and white flour (no fiber)…then we’re a long way from colon health. Here is the Gall Bladder Elimination or a Liver Flush I have used and it really works--as given to me by my Nutritionist years ago. It also removes an extreme amount of cholesterol. It is extremely important to be in good condition-especially your heart:
For 4 days straight drink l quart of apple juice.
Last Day 3 hours before the evening meal drink:
l tbsp. epson salts mixed with l cup of water
For dinner that evening eat:
l fresh orange
l fresh grapefruit
Whipped cream
take a coffee emmena: l quart perked coffee with 2 tbsp. epson salts
one hour later:
l/8 cup raw cold pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil with l tbsp. grapefruit juice.
Lay down on right side and bring right leg up toward chest and have hips elevated for 20 minutes. Take 4 doese of olive oil mixture.
Continue to lay on the right side. All this time chew gum-any kind but keep chewing when you go to bed, keep the gum in your mouth and eanytime you would awaken chew chew chew-
Next morning:
Take l quart coffee emmena with l btsp. epson salts - pass
Do a 2nd emmena with coffee/epson salts

You will literally be washed out for a short time but strength comes quickly.
My mother who was about 70 at the time froze the stones and when she went to the doctor very proud (not the nutritlioist) they were all mush--but she did not have to have an operation and she repeated this like 3 months later to be sure.

Helpful ideas for Lymphedema

There are 600-800 lymph nodes in the body. The lymph system serves to return proteins and fluid to the veins and helps to maintain blood volume. Lymph fluid is made up of excess protein, surplus water, dead cells, bacteria, viruses, hormones, vitamins, blood cells and inorganic matter, i.e.,dyes.

When the drainage of lymph fluid is decreased because of blockage in this system and/or removal of the lymph nodes, the lymph fluid builds up or pools and can create problems for the individual.

The pooled lymph fluid is a rich breeding ground for the bacteria and can rapidly result in infection. Furthermore, water is attracted to protein and is therefore attracted to the protein-rich lymph fluid and creates the swelling associated with lymphedema.

Detoxification, supplements, & a Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is suggested. MLD is a gentle massage which stimulates circulation & gets the fluid out of the lymphatic vessels and into the bloodstream, where it can be disposed of by the body.

I would flush toxins out the body by: drinking eight to 10 glasses of water daily, and clease the colon with Herb-Lax for at least three months. Vita E with the grape seed extract will help neutralize any free radicals left behind from toxin buildup. (3 a day) is suggested.

Also I would take Ez-Gest to break down protein and fats, & Liver DTX, which contains dandelion and acts as a natural diuretic. Liver health is a key to lymphatic health. CHICAGO (Reuters) - Some people develop osteoporosis, the mineral loss disease that leads to brittle bones, because their bodies cannot tolerate wheat flour, a study said on Monday.

Gluten intolerance, called celiac disease, can be treated, so the damage done by osteoporosis can be reversed in such patients, added the report published in the current issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Our results suggest that as many as three to four percent of patients who have osteoporosis have the bone disease as a consequence of having celiac disease, which makes them unable to absorb normal amounts of calcium and vitamin D," said William Stenson, a Washington University physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He and colleagues recommended blood tests be used to screen osteoporosis patients for celiac disease.

The report was based on a look at 840 patients, some of whom had osteoporosis. It found a much higher prevalence of celiac disease among those with osteoporosis than in those without it.

Celiac disease triggers an immune reaction to the gluten portion of wheat, interfering with the intestine's absorption of various foods. Some patients do not know they have the disease because their symptoms are minor.

In the study, patients with celiac disease and osteoporosis who went on a gluten-free diet for one year were able to improve both gastrointestinal symptoms and bone density, the report said.

"Bone density ... improved dramatically on a gluten-free diet," Stenson said. "We believe the diet allowed their intestines to heal, and that allowed them to absorb normal amounts of calcium and vitamin D to reverse
bone loss."

While there is a genetic predisposition for celiac disease, many people don't develop symptoms until later in life, Stenson said.

Bronchitis

My father, who was 73 at the time, had chronic bronchitis for about a year. When he moved from Michigan to Florida, where I live, I found out about it. He said he needed to find a doctor down here fast.

I put him on 9 EPA (Now Essential Omega-3 Complex) daily (3 with each meal) and after about 10 days he didn't care if he found a doctor. He had continued taking his Vita-Lea, Alfalfa and C Sustained Release and perhaps some other supplements, not as much as I'd like him to use.
